What is a Transponder key?

There are many people who have lost their car keys over the last couple of years, who have gone to dealerships only to discover that the replacement cost is significantly higher than expected. Not so long ago duplication of keys was very cheap no more than a couple of dollars. Many automotive locksmiths are approached by people who want to know what a transponder chip key is? Over the last couple of decades there have been a dedicated effort by many motor vehicle manufacturers to invent systems which could prevent motor vehicle theft. In fact, the concept of transponder keys is something which has its roots in WW2. It was something which was necessary to prevent friendly fire incidents especially against Allied aircraft. A transponder system was used to transmit a signal to an aircraft which would then be recognized by the system on the aircraft which would then respond with a corresponding code and this is where the word transponder has originated.

Constant technological discoveries

Over the last couple of years there was increasing use of microchips and computers in vehicles and a simplified version of the systems is now used in car keys and also in the anti-theft computer systems which is used in motor vehicles. Around the mechanical key hole of your ignition there is an antenna coil and what happens is that when the key is turned on that coil becomes energized which leads to the creation of a small magnetic field. The magnetic field which is created now energizes a small transponder chip which has been integrated into the plastic head of your key. The integrated chip emits a signal to the antenna ring which then conveys the necessary information to the computer located on the vehicle. The transmission signal contains the proper security code which then allows the car to start. In earlier times the security coding was very basic but in modern motor vehicles has a transmission code which can carry an 80-bit alpha numeric code. This results in a random making code with mathematical odds which is running into the millions of possibilities.

Some of the most useful benefits

With some of the modern sophisticated systems it is entirely possible to limit the speed of your vehicle when it is driven by your child. You can even control the volume on the radio of your motor vehicle. In the event where any key is lost or stolen it is entirely possible to erase the information off the lost key from your vehicle security system without the need for expensive mechanical rekeying. However, sophistication is not cheap and in fact it is necessary to have the correct tools as well as extensive training and the correct equipment such as key blanks in order to be able to produce a key which will be working correctly. This is why it is very important to ask the correct questions when you call on locksmiths, it cannot be over emphasized how important it is to only do business with locksmiths who will be able to provide you with vehicle entry systems that actually works.
